We Asked Desis About Their Experiences With Online Dating
Finding love can be hard, but a lot of people believe it to be fate. Trends are changing and online dating has become a thing even among desi culture. While a lot of people are very enthusiastic to try online dating, a lot of people are still very hesitant and prefer to stick to the traditional dating ways over online dating because of the safety concerns which honestly are pretty valid if you really look at it.
Young people are more into online dating than the people who are in their late twenties or early thirties. Some people actually found the love of their life on the online dating portals and that really melted our heart, while some people had really bad experiences which kinda had been a lesson.
People have very valid reason to try or to not try online dating and honestly it is totally their choice. It certainly has a charm, but also drawbacks, but then again, what doesn’t? We asked desis if they would try a dating website, and their responses were very insightful.
We asked Anaya, a 22-year-old graduate student if she would try online dating and her response gave us an insight into how the young generation sees online dating.
‘'I have been very active on a dating website, to be honest, and if I am being real, my experience has been everything from really bad to amazing. I, unfortunately, did not find a life partner but I did find some really good friends when you go on a dating website, that's not what you have in mind, I know, but online dating is so much full of surprises, so if you are up for a roller-coaster ride, maybe you should give it a try and also be smart about it and be safe.’’
We asked Bareshaam, who works in a multinational company and is married to the love of her life and her story definitely gave us so much hope. Maybe we’ll find love after all.
‘’That’s where I found the love of my life! I mean, it is so weird and controversial enough in a desi setup that we could not go like, ‘’hey mom, meet my boyfriend, I found him on a dating website where a lot of people are looking for hookups.
’’ My mom would have killed me. Nobody knows how we actually met but it was so cute! We matched, we realized we had so much in common, we flirted, we went out on the cutest date, we made out, we fell in love. As unreal as it may sound, it is the truth and I keep reminding myself that.’’
The next person we asked it from clearly had hesitations based on not so good experiences, which also puts forward an important aspect of online dating.
‘’I was actually very hesitant, but my friends made me an account on a dating website. I was bored so I started swiping, and boy was I disappointed. I honestly haven’t come across as many misogynistic, and so full of ego men in real life. I guess they were just being open about their misogyny because in 2018 we aren’t accepting this kind of behavior?’’
‘There was this person I agreed to meet, he sounded really nice, so I thought alright, let's give it a shot. So I went out on a date with him and bought him a gift because he casually mentioned he'd get me a gift and I thought it wouldn't be nice if I don't get him something, so yeah. I went there, met him and realized that he was a flaming extrovert. I am a total introvert and obviously, it didn't work out and there was no second date.''
‘’I love dating websites. I haven’t find ‘’the one’’ yet, but then I think I am not looking for one right now either. It has been great so far. I have come across some really amazing people. I would totally recommend online dating. Plus, you get to meet so many people, have fun with them. I have no regrets. However, I think online dating is safer for men than it is for women, but it is still fun.’’
‘’So I met this amazing girl who sounded so fun on texts. I went there and talked the entire time. There were a lot of awkward silences and she did absolutely nothing to fill in the gaps. I thought maybe she just wasn't interested. Her facial expressions were so hard to read. I honestly thought it wasn't going to work out, but in the end, I realized that she was just nervous. The next time we met was so amazing. I am so glad it happened. She is literally the best thing ever happened to me. I am just so lucky to find her. I think I am just going to write a success story someday and tell the entire world to not judge a book by its cover.''
‘'I went out on a date with this guy… I am actually very open-minded and he came out as a cool person, or at least that's how he sounded like on the texts. So I went to see him and he couldn't stop talking about smoking weed and how much he loves partying and alcohol and girls and how it's tragic (not for him) that it didn't work out with his exes. It was honestly a turn-off. I normally wouldn't mind talking about weed and partying but if that's all he has to talk about then thanks, but no thanks.''
Different people surely had different experiences with online dating, some of them were weird, and some of them were amazing and they ended up meeting the love of their lives. Even when there were bad experiences, online dating can still be fun. Life is all about experiences, both good and bad, so just go out and explore.
